Consisting of correspondence and related material documenting Legare's career as an engineer with the City of Columbia, S.C., the South Carolina Highway Dept., and the U.S. War Dept. Corps of Engineers, and as District Manager of the Columbia area office of the War Production Board; his association with various professional engineering organizations; and his pioneer leadership in the engineering registration movement. Includes 4 manuscripts, 8 Oct. - 9 Nov. 1917, indicating Legare's role as City Engineer in construction of an outfall sanitary sewer system for the City of Columbia; 11 photographs, 1919 and undated, of Legare, War Production Board photos, and a 1919 view of sheet asphalt pavement on Columbia's Main Street; manuscript, 7 Dec. 1929, "A Recommended Uniform Registration Law for Engineers and Surveyors"; 194 items, 15 Mar. - 22 Oct. 1932, "Highway Safety" news spots produced in cooperation with the S.C. Highway Dept.; 92 items, Sept. 1934 - 18 Sept. 1937 and undated, correspondence and related materials re Legare's association with the National Society of Professional Engineers and his resignation as Executive Secretary; and printed manuscript, 30 Nov. 1942, general layout plan of Congaree Army Airport, designed by Legare. Also includes 147 manuscripts, 9 Feb. 1942 - Nov. 1945 and undated, correspondence and related items re Legare's association with the War Production Board, including typed manuscript, 14 Sept. 1945, "Certain Aspects in the History of War Production Board Region 4"; and Legare's account book (unbound volume), 1919-1925, while employed as Vice-president of Carolina Concrete Pipe Company and Southern District Manager for Dow and Smith, Consulting Asphalt and Paving Engineers, New York. Contains undated volume of newspaper articles re the burning of Columbia in 1865; and letter, 25 Nov. 1901, with an autobiographical sketch written "For My Children."
